Multimedia:

Reporting:

  • Poynter.org: Probably the best industry Web site out there.
  • Romanesko: Your daily fix of media industry news, commentary and memos.

Programs I use:

  • Audacity: a free audio-editing program. This is a snap to use once you get used to the interface.
  • Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver: This is a no-brainer for anyone interested in multimedia. I am proficient at Photoshop and I am learning Dreamweaver, as you can see.
  • Soundslides: Just like it says, "ridiculously simple storytelling."

Equipment I use:

  • Olympus DS-40 512 MB Digital Voice Recorder: I began using this recorder in October 2007 and it's so much better than my previous recorder. My starter recorder was an Olympus WS-100, great for learning audio. The DS-40 has many more features and I look forward to creating more audio pieces. I have been recording interviews since March 2006.
  • Olympus ME-15 lavalier microphone: This is a great lav mic for the price.
  • I have an outdated Toshiba digital camera. It is easy to use and is great for a photographer shortage or breaking news. It requires little training to use; just make sure you don't have something coming out of the subject's head or power lines going through your shot.
  • A Garmin GPS device. I know this might not seem like great journalism equipment, but I am new to Western Washington and it really helps to just plug in an address and go. It's great to finally find the Interstate in five minutes instead of seeing it from downtown Seattle and driving around for an hour.
