FREDERICK — For two years, Frederick hadn’t tasted victory in the Patriot League.
Until Friday night.
The Warriors, behind three touchdowns by senior Chris Willden, ran past University, 42-6, to end two years of frustration on homecoming night.
“The seniors, they wanted it so bad,” said junior Tim Fuss, who scored on a 60-yard touchdown. “This is their last homecoming and we did it for them. We played good as a team and came out strong from the get go.”
The Warriors held University
scoreless until the Bulldogs
punched one in with 3:51 left in
the fourth quarter. By then,
Frederick had substituted liberally
to give everyone a chance to
get in on the victory.
“The freshmen were excited and fired up,” Frederick head coach Thad Lear said after the game. “No point in being jerks and trying to run up the score. I am proud of them as a team.”
The Warriors capitalized on
several turnovers and an unintended
on-side kick to take an insurmountable
lead. Frederick
had a comfortable 28-0 advantage
at halftime, and the fans
were already in a celebratory
mood.
More than 500 fans cheered wildly with every yard Frederick gained.
Jonathan Martinez said the team was thrown into the varsity ring two years ago with virtually no experience. The Warriors have grown together and now and it’s finally starting to show.
“Today everyone played their part. The line did really good too,” Martinez said. “We’ve been better at working together; much more communication than in the past.”
Willden, who normally plays running back, led the way as the quarterback.
“I feel more comfortable with running,” he said. “But I need to be more patient (with passing). I have trouble reading cover. Our line did really awesome.”
Frederick (1-3) plays at Weld Central next Friday.
